UPGRADED INLINE EXHAUST FANS WORTH IT?
UPGRADED INLINE EXHAUST FANS WORTH IT?
Im sure there is plenty of feeds on this. But I want to be quick at my decision. Are upgraded inline exhaust fans worth the money and are they really making a difference? And one last thing, what ones do you all prefer? I have the Roly MKII 20w.

A fan is only 1/2 the battle. The effectiveness of the fan relies largely on where the exhaust is going, and the available makeup air supply.

I have the MK2 10/30W as my second machine and one of the first things I did was upgrade to an inline fan. My setup is in the basement and fortunately I was able to cut a hole in the joist to the outside and put a outside vent with a auto closing flap. Same thing as I use for my dryer vent. Be sure to put your inline fan as close to your outside exhaust as you can. It's easier for the fan to PULL the smoke from your laser than it is to push it if you put the inline fan next to the laser. It works great and I have no smell at all in the basement when I am cutting. Here's the link to the amazon one I purchased.

I bought this one and it works great. I have a setup similar to a clothes dryer vent going to the outside with a flapper on it. I like this model because it has variable speeds and a separate controller with a long cord that is easy to get at if you mount the blower out of reach.

They are absolutely worth the investment if you remove the stock fan and get at least 200CFMs:

As a carpenter, I must say I cringe when reading about a hole cut in a floor joist. Most people don't know what they can and cannot get away with when cutting/drilling into floor joists. I hope nothing is compromised by the cutting/drilling. I've seen many bad scenarios with joists that have been modified by DIY'ers and even trade pros alike.

My bad. It wasn't the joist but the End Joist on top of the Sill Plate. It was actually about 6" next to the laundry vent.dovetaildan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 8:53 pmAs a carpenter, I must say I cringe when reading about a hole cut in a floor joist. Oh, and just to be a nerd, that's called a Rim Joist.

You know that actually brings up another good point I hadn't thought of till just now. For anyone venting the laser outside. Make sure you stay away from any intake venting for your HVAC. I guess that probably applies mostly to those of us in the northern parts. While exhausting the fumes/smoke from the laser to the outdoors is the way to go, you definitely don't want to exhaust it next to an intake vent to then be sucked into your HVAC system and spread throughout your house. It's been a long time, so I don't remember the spacing exactly, but it seems like you want at least three feet from the intake vent. Also you want to stay away from any gas regulator as well. Something about warm air, cooling and condensing that causes harm to the regulator.
