Out on medical leave
I am out on medical leave until the 2nd week of April.
As some of you may already know, I have been struggling with spine issues for 2 years now. Eight weeks ago, I had a major repair done to the lumbar section that unfortunately failed. I am going offline now for another back surgery in the morning to correct the last one and replace some of the hardware, so I will out for a week or two. So if you don't hear from me, you'll know why!
Be back soon...
Rich

Re: Out on medical leave
I wish you the best, Rich. Once they start cutting into the back, it will never be right again. I am told by people who have been through the process ... "Don't have back surgery unless they take drag into the operating room screaming in unimaginable pain!"
Read the book, "Diet for a New America." It talks about the American "Bad Back." It is our diet! We feed hormones to our beef, that break down the meat muscle, and makes it tender. Well, those hormones are in OUR bodies after decades of eating this beef, and they work just as well to break down our disks and tendons in our necks and backs, and create all sorts of physical ailments.
Combine this with the FACT that very few Americans wake up and do 50 sit ups every morning before beginning their days. The CORE of our bodies is extremely weak and damaged.
Take a short cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper. Stand it on one end like a chimney. Now take a hardcover book and balance it on the tube. Notice how the thin cardboard tube can support the book? That is because the CORE of the tube is structurally sound. All points of the top rim of the tube are equally supported.
Now cut away 50% of the center of the tube from one side, and try to balance that book on the tube. Try to place something only 5% of the book's weight onto the tube. It will collapse before you even let go! The tube cannot support any weight with only 1/2 of the cylinder intact.
Our backs are actually very strong, but due to our lethargic, remote control, elevator/escalator, "let a machine lift it for me" lifestyles, we do absolutely NOTHING to make the other side of our "tubes" (our torsos) equally strong. We do not strengthen our stomach muscles as a society.
So our backs are burdened with ALL of the work of keeping us standing upright. They work even harder when we pick up something heavy, or hold it out in front of us! Our BACKS are the only things that support all of that weight. They are NEVER at rest because we would tip over forward, since our stomach muscles are practically worthless. Our backs get TIRED of doing ALL of the work, and when combined with hormones that destroy our disks, the results are guaranteed. Welcome to "The American Bad Back."
Lying in bed and doing leg lifts helps, but only BEFORE the damage is done. After the back is injured, it is nearly impossible to restore it to its former strength.
