New to Lightburn and my X-Tool D1 10W laser. I'm experienced with 3d printers, commercial embroidery etc, but laser stupid. Thanks for this list as I'm 65 and have COPD so inhaling bad vapors can be a real big issue for me.

My question, Mr. La Hobby Guy is this: I have some mugs and travel mugs that are coated for dye sublimation with a polyester based coating. Are you aware of any issues engraving these items? The coffee mugs are ceramic and the travel mugs are white on metal and plain metal.

Thanks... I'm here because I watched your video! I'll have to modify your files for my 10w x-tool but it's worth the time especially since you've saved me so much time!

Hi Matthew,

Yes, I did some polyester bags last year and the first one I ran the power test on burst into flames! I had the same problem with a lot of different cloth items. I do a lot of wedding stuff, so I do a lot of linen, glass, paper & laser safe vinyl. Be really careful on you test piece. Set you speed high and the power low. I do my power scale now on these items at:
20, 25, 30, 35 & 40% power
5000, 5500, 6000 & 6500 speed
And then make adjustments from there if needed.

No particular issues with polyester based products but the fact is no product burned with a laser produces anything actually good for you. The result of burning can range from a simple obnoxious odour to overtly toxic fumes - even inhaling wood smoke (e.g., Cedar) can be bad for you. The bottom line is that if you intend to do any amount of work you should invest in buying or building an enclosure plus fume extraction system then you have no more worries.
Machines: Sculpfun S9, Neje LM2 20W and 30W modules, Atomstack M50 module. I'm retired with interests in home shop engineering, astrophotography, and a whole lot of other stuff. Avatar is my dog Hazel who's much better looking than me.

This is mostly off-topic:

I have my enclosure vented outside. I love the smell outside when I am engraving on maple or cedar. Especially cedar.

I'm a new member also. So glad to see this. As a matter of fact I have printed this and placed on wall in my shop.

Thank you for this information. I was about to cut Lexan. This is my first week with my Ortur laser. Your videos on youtube have been a great help in learning lightburn.
As a fellow Louisianaian, I sincerely thank you!
