sealing cork coasters

Maybe I didn't say this correctly, I have watched Rich's video a dozen times and after soaking the cork in water will that set the charred cork where it doesn't rub off or stink yet. I figure the bigger size would be used to set a hot dish (say out of the oven) on. So, I wondered if there would be a spray or brush on coating to seal the trivet that would also be heat resistant.

I think there may also be a disconnect on treating the cork. Rich says “… just mist them down with water … causes the soot to stain into the cork… not get them soaking wer… let it dry….“

If you soak the cork, the staining is not going to happen as the soot stain will not draw into the cork.

Also, “low and slow”. You want a deep heat and color, not a quick burn that leaves just a char that brushes off.

Does the burnt cork smell go away after time. Also, how long do you rinse the second time?

No Gary, it takes a LONG time. However, instead of using a spritz of plain water, mix in a little white vinegar to the bottle, maybe a teaspoon or so to 16 oz of water, and it'll cause the soot to stain the cork, and remove the smell. After the first treatment dries, I usually wash them with soap and water the next day.
