Another “honey-do” project! My sister is coming for a visit and we don’t have a bed in the guest room! I’m certainly not going to pay the high prices for inferior furniture, so it’s off to the backyard shop!
I have a bunch of pine 2x10s in the wood pile, so I think I’ll make some use out of them. Also, while I was at work a few weeks ago, I was passing by a new construction home site in an upscale neighborhood and saw a carpenter working in the garage. Whenever I see new construction, I always stop and make conversation leading up to the “BIG QUESTION!” Hey, you got any offcuts or left overs? 🙂 Well they were doing white oak, 3/4″ T&G flooring, and he pointed to a pile in the corner and said you can have everything there! Long story short, I got 18, 6′ rejects and 37 offcuts ranging from 2′ to 4′ or so! Talk about a score!
So here is the almost finished headboard. I ripped the 2x10s to 2×3″ and planed them for the frame and inset a 3/4″ centered dado to accept the white oak flooring. I then re-sawed one 2×10 to 3/4″ for the head-board legs. I did a hard round-over on all the parts and sanded up to a 400 grit. My original plan was to use a light walnut stain.

Below is the final project. Yeah, I know! How could you paint such beautiful wood?! Well the Wife insisted on black since she’s planning on a black and gold New Orleans Saints theme for the room… Oh well.
I used the rest of the 2x10s for the rails and for the front legs, I made L shaped legs from the flooring boards so they match the head-board. I set those inside the frame and it’s an awesome look! I’m sorry you can’t see that in the photo, but the room is very small and I couldn’t get a good photo. I used another 2×10 for the center support and cedar fence pickets for the support slats.
Oh yeah, the box-spring hadn’t come it yet in the photo, which is why you see the gap in the headboard. It has since come in and it looks great now.

I got the Coolvie hybrid mattress and the frame hardware from Amazon, and the best price on the box-spring ($99.00) was from Walmart.com. I have to say, the Coolvie mattress with the hybrid pocket coils and memory foam is extremely comfortable! In fact, for only $349.00, I believe it’s even better than our $2500.00 mattress from the “big guy” memory foam company! Everyone that’s tried it so far absolutely loves it!
This turned out to be a really enjoyable honey-do! And I got to repurpose almost all of the materials! I hope you enjoyed the article. Any questions or comments, feel free to reply!
I’m going to take more and better photos in future posts. I’m thinking step-by-step would be much better. Bear with me! I’m just getting used to this whole blogging thing! 🙂
