Laser cutting enthusiasts and crafters looking for quick and beautiful projects will find this guide invaluable. We will explore how to create a layered photo frame from start to finish using the Cuttle SVG maker and the Aliencell X1 laser cutter. This process is straightforward, efficient, and perfect for making personalized gifts like fridge magnets.
Discovering New Designs on Cuttle
Cuttle recently introduced a new category called “photo frames,” which offers a wide variety of SVG files ready for laser cutting. After not visiting the site for about a month, I was excited to explore the new additions.
Browsing through the photo frames category, I found numerous options suitable for different occasions such as Easter and Mother’s Day. For this project, I chose a Mother’s Day fridge magnet photo frame design.
Selecting and Downloading the SVG File
The chosen design displayed a preview of the finished product and the laser work bed layout. The SVG file included layers with different colors indicating engraving and cutting paths: black for engraving and red for cutting.
Without making any modifications, I downloaded the SVG file using the pro version of Cuttle, which allows for one-click downloads. The file was saved locally, ready for import into the laser software.
Preparing the File in Aliencell X1 Laser Software
Next, I imported the SVG file into the Aliencell X1 laser software. Upon import, I ungrouped the elements to rearrange some text layers to optimize material usage.
I grouped the necessary elements carefully to avoid mistakes and assigned the correct layers to either cut or engrave. Zooming in confirmed that all cuts and engravings were properly set.
Setting Up the Laser Cutter
For this project, I used two pieces of pre-painted wood: one white and one pink. I arranged the design elements on the laser bed accordingly, placing the pink parts on the pink wood and the white parts on the white wood.
The project was sized appropriately to create a fridge magnet. The laser settings were configured for 3mm basswood slats, with cutting power at 67 and speed at 14, and engraving speed at 600 mm/s with power at 85.
Running the Laser Job
Before starting, I activated the laser’s camera live view to monitor the process. The laser automatically handled focus adjustments and air assist settings, switching between low for engraving and high for cutting.
The cutting and engraving process was then initiated, and the project was completed efficiently.
Assembling the Photo Frame
After cutting, the pieces included the top part with “Mom” and little hearts, the backer, and the spacer. The design allows sliding pictures in from the backside.
I used CA glue to assemble the parts, attaching the “Best” and “Ever” pieces on top of the frame. To finish, I recommended using strong 3M magnets on the back to create a durable fridge magnet.
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
The final product turned out beautifully, with crisp white hearts and a clean finish. This project took only a few seconds to design and a short time to cut and assemble.
About Cuttle Membership
Cuttle offers a pro membership with over a thousand templates and unlimited downloads for $21.60 monthly (discounted) or $194.40 yearly. Compared to purchasing individual files on platforms like Etsy, this membership is cost-effective and provides access to an SVG editor and a vast library of designs.
Educators and students may qualify for free pro memberships, making it accessible for learning and teaching.
Materials Used
The wood used was Creatorally pre-painted wood with a beautiful finish and a solid wood core, not just veneer over MDF. This wood cuts smoothly and is ideal for laser projects.
